#CANADA150 – I MET THE PRIME MINISTER!!
The past two years I have travelled with Historica Canada, VIA Rail along side the Breakfast Club of Toronto to mentor 250 bright young kids, in grade 5 to 8, as a wrap up for Black History Month. (my family is Black Canadian and I discuss Canadian identity, the importance of knowing your family history and gaining strength from the qualities of ancestors). Black paramedics, police officers, VIA conductors and other esteemed professionals chatted with students during the 4 hour train ride and opened their eyes to the roles of Black men and women in their communities.
This year I sat in as the students visited the House of Commons, toured Parliament for the first time and as a surprise, had a meet and greet with Justin Trudeau – the Prime Minister of Canada (and yes – so very handsome!)
When he walked in, it was like lightening struck the room – he lit those children up with his words, thoughtful presence and small, mindful moments. i hope to use my life in the same way – seeing him in my reflection – the day after my birthday – affirmed that I’m doing something right! walked off the Hill a proud(er) #Canadian and I wasn’t the only one! an unforgettable day.
